Update: Hispanic Leadership Initiative

Hola hermanos!

I will be sending you monthly updates this summer as I will be in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico from June 2nd- July 22nd, as well as starting a youth ministry at New City East Lake in August. This is the first of those emails this summer.

I have been preparing for my time in Juárez with lots of reading and praying! Several weeks ago, I spoke with Pastor Alcides and the Burkempers, MTW missionaries on the border, talking over my job description and asking about the community surrounding the church. One of the books I have been reading preparation is David Livermore’s, Serving with Eyes Wide Open: Doing Short-term Missions with Cultural Intelligence. Although I am bicultural, I am aware of certain American inclinations I have and want to be wise and self-aware when I join my Mexican brothers and sisters in Juárez.

The areas I’ll serve in includes mentoring youth leaders, encouraging and assisting in the women’s ministry, giving a basic English course to the pastoral couples, and aiding the missionaries when missions teams arrive. I know that the Lord has been working in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico for a long time and I want him to use me there. My desire is to go ready to serve the church and youth leaders while learning as much about the Lord’s work there and bring back what I learn to ministry at New City East Lake.

Please continue to pray for my formation as a leader and for my time at New City East Lake. I am completing year one of two here in Chattanooga. Also, please pray for the launching of the youth ministry following VBS in August, for the youth of East Lake we desire to serve and for God to raise up male volunteers.

Con la gracia y paz de nuestro Padre,

Evangelina Castillo
